Launched in 2006, Can't Stop the Serenity (CSTS) is a global campaign that began as a tribute to Joss Whedon's birthday. Browncoast in cities worldwide have joined together to watch Whedon's 2005 movie Serenity to show their support for Joss and women's rights. Monies raised by the CSTS campaign are donated to the international women's rights organization, Equality Now. Joss has been continually outspoken in his support of the organization and gender equality initiatives. For more information on Joss' support of Equality Now, check out this speech. At the global level, $65,000 was raised in 2006, $106,000 in 2007, and over $46,000 is currently reported for 2009, bringing the three-year total to more than $200,000. Locally, the Arizona Browncoats have participated in CSTS since its inception. Each year, a screening of Serenity has been held in both Tucson and Phoenix. In 2007, the Arizona Browncoats decided to donate a portion of the proceeds to local women's organizations, a commitment that was kept in 2008. Proceeds from the Tucson screenings in 2007 and 2008 were donated to the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona (WFSA). Proceeds from the Phoenix screening in 2007 were donated to Growth Improvement for Female Teens (GIFT) while 2008 proceeds were donated to the Fresh Start Women's Foundation (Fresh Start). Overall, the Arizona Browncoats have raised over $30,000 for charity through CSTS. The totals for each year are displayed below:
The screenings give old and new Browncoats alike another chance to see their Big Damn Heroes in action on the big screen. While the end goal is to raise money for a charitable cause, CSTS is also about the camaraderie of the Browncoat community and having fun. The Arizona screenings offer local Browncoats the chance to mingle with some of their own and escape into the Whedon 'Verse for a few hours. We've even tried to extend the experience a bit by adding 'Verse costume contests, raffles, prizes, other entertainment, and even swag. While we are sad that the 2008 events are over, we're already brainstorming for 2009... and we hope you'll join us! As the background kanji on our website says: "Together we can end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world." |
