2007 screening reports

I posted this elsewhere on the site, but it could kind of double as our Tempe/Phoenix report for 07:

For the Phoenix/Tempe screening (sold out at 400) we had:

a) goodie bags - had a "program guide," Serenity fortune cookie, Firefly stickers, EN bracelet, AzBc tattoo, coupons for a free appetizer at the fancy chinese restaurant around the corner from the theatre, and flyers from a lot of the clubs, conventions and businesses that donated prizes.

b) singers - a pair of local filk singers strolled the line, performing Firefly songs.

c) costume contest - had at least a dozen folks willing to participate in a quickie costume display.

d) gift baskets - we had several fabulous character-based "crates" (literally) full of prizes up for raffle.

e) general raffle - for $1 you could get a raffle ticket for a chance at your choice from 60-some different prizes.

f) fortune cookie winner - one special fortune cookie (saying that 6/21 was their lucky day) anointed someone in the audience the winner, and they got several cool prizes.

g) merchandise available for sale - besides the CSTS tshirts (sold out), we had AzBc brown silicone wristbands, and Kaylee (& other design) parasols. We were going to have Jayne hats too, but that didn't manifest.

h) spontaneous singing - after the movie and before the raffle & gb drawings, a few guys got up and starting singing, encouraging the whole theatre crowd to join in.

i) we had the Ariel Ambulance in town and were planning to have it parked outside for all to see, but couldn't get it to the theatre due to finding out at the last minute we needed to have some million dollar insurance policy for it to be on city property...

We raised $6195, and donated 20% to a local women's charity... the rest of course going to Equality Now.

Pittsburgh had a slightly smaller turnout in 2007 as compared to 2006 (about 105 vs about 85-90), but we almost tripled our money raised, topping out at more than $1400. Our wonderful local sponsors helped us get to that point - by the time we arrived at the theater that evening, we were already in the black and everything raised from that point on was pure profit for Equality Now.

For two college students, who worked our asses off for months, we were pretty damn proud.

Graz, Austria, Europe 2007:

Our event took place 21st and 22nd of June.
21st we had a discussion titled:
I Aim to Misbehave!
Reassessing Science-Fiction: Dystopia and Utopia, rebellious pathos and perpetuation of reactionary thinking, transgressive body-politics and maintenance of paternalistic gender-concepts

it went fine, with two different talks. Really cool!

22nd of June we had a screening of Serenity, OV; (that was the point of the entire thing: to be able to watch Serenity in Graz at least once in OV!)

about 50 people came, we had a lot of fun, watched the movie had a raffle with the things of the global sponsor package (thanks!), and afterwards there was a big party.

I had a loss of 100 euros (150 dollars), that's why no money for Equality Now was given to. And as the Joss-Whedon-fanbase didn't grow immensely I don't organize another this year.

That's too bad, bookworm. It sounds like a good time, though.

Here's my report - copied from our blog.

In 2007 we had a wonderful event which was even more successful than we hoped. Thanks to getting an earlier start, selling tickets at the Buffy Sing-Along event on June 2nd, Happy Bats selling tickets for us, and especially the announcement that Jewel was going to be on hand to introduce the movie, we had sold all 210 tickets several days before the event. We had our first ever sponsor, Mad About Movies, and almost $200 in donations on the day.

Not only did Jewel introduce the movie, she pulled the names for the door prizes and handed them out, then after the movie, she stayed outside the theatre for an hour, talking to everyone who was there, autographing items people brought to her, and posing for pictures. She was gracious and patient, as was her husband Matt, and everybody was very pleased to have spent time with her.

We doubled the amount of money we were able to send to Equality Now, to $2,600 (helped by the rise in the Canadian dollar!) and everyone seemed to have a good time.
