The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center

The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center provides a safe after-school environment where hundreds of boys and girls in South Central Los Angeles nurture their dreams, participate in tutoring and academic enrichment programs, learn important social skills and are guided to succeed in school and enter college. Serenity actor Ron Glass is a member of the Board of Directors for the center.

The Northern Virginia Browncoats are donating a portion of the proceeds from CSTS Arlington to The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center.

The BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Foundation

The BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Foundation raises much needed funds for BC Women’s, the only facility in British Columbia, Canada devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns, and families. Located in Vancouver, they provide a range of specialized, tertiary, primary and secondary health services that address the needs of women of all ages and backgrounds, as well as training for providers across the province.

The BC Browncoats donated a portion of the proceeds from CSTS Vancouver 2009 to The BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre Foundation.

The House of the Good Shepherd is a shelter and recovery program for battered women and their children that works to end the cycle of domestic violence in the Chicagoland area. The women and children in the 3.5-month program receive intensive counseling, education, and help to heal, regain their dignity and become self-sufficient. Each family has a private apartment where they practice independent living skills and prepare themselves for lives as healthy families. The House also provides a learning center where the women work on their education and job goals, a child care center and an aftercare program that promotes long-term recovery.

91% of the women in the program leave their abusers and go on to make productive lives for themselves and their children, and 83% of all donated funds goes directly to the program.

The Chicagoland Browncoats donated a portion (25%) of the proceeds from their CSTS Chicago 2009 event to The House of the Good Shepherd.

The Greater Boston Food Bank

The Greater Boston Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping end hunger in eastern Massachusetts.

The New England Browncoats held a food drive as part of their Boston CSTS 2009 events. Any one bringing a non-perishable food item gets into a raffle for prizes including an actual Serenity prop from The Prop Store of London.

The Kids Need to Read Foundation

The Kids Need to Read Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity Kids Need to Read works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to under-funded schools, libraries, and literacy programs across the United States, especially those serving disadvantaged children. The organization was founded by author PJ Haarsma and Serenity actor Nathan Fillion in August 2007.

Nashville Cares

Nashville Cares is Tennessee’s leading community-based AIDS service organization. Our mission is to promote and participate in a comprehensive and compassionate response to HIV and AIDS through education, advocacy, and supportive services. The doors of CARES are open to anyone affected by HIV and AIDS in need of comfort.

Whedonites United and CSTS Nashville supported Nashville Cares with 15% of their total amount raised in 2009.
