Equality Now
There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That’s me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That’s a great deal harder, and that’s Equality Now. It’s not about politics; it’s about basic human decency.
- Joss Whedon
Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Working with national human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support their efforts to stop these human rights abuses.
Through its Women’s Action Network of concerned groups and individuals around the world, Equality Now:

Other Worthy Causes While the majority of profits from a screening go to Equality Now, organizers can choose to donate up to 25% to other charities of their choice. Many choose to give to local charities or other global charities that have special meaning to Browncoats. |

Joss on Whedonesque
Joss Whedon made a post on Whedonesque titled, “Let’s Watch A Girl Get Beaten To Death”. This post inspired a blog “I am Du’a Khalil”.

All I ask is this: Do something. Try something. Speaking out, showing up, writing a letter, a check, a strongly worded e-mail. Pick a cause – there are few unworthy ones. And nudge yourself past the brink of tacit support to action. Once a month, once a year, or just once. If you can’t think of what to do, there is this handy link. Even just learning enough about a subject so you can speak against an opponent eloquently makes you an unusual personage. Start with that. Any one of you would have cried out, would have intervened, had you been in that crowd in Bashiqa. Well thanks to digital technology, you’re all in it now.
Nothing But Red is a project started to write an anthology of “responses” to Du’a Khalil Aswad’s death and issues inspired by Joss’s essay on Whedonesque.

Why are we here?
The answer to this question varies. Many of us participate in CSTS events and other Browncoat related activities for a number of reasons. We join together to make a difference in the world because we’ve been rallied by Joss’s words to do something, anything. We meet up so that we can share our love of the Serenity/Firefly/Whedonverse, and because we are like-minded folk who want to share other aspects of our lives with our fellow Fireflyians. These are just a few of the reasons we come together in this fellowship.
|
And they are all, very good reasons. The main focus of Can’t Stop the Serenity has always been to help Equality Now keep the signal going. EN seeks to let the voices of abused women the world over, cry out and be heard. Humanity can listen and come together, seeking to end all suffering and abuse – one voice at a time. Sadly, there are many cases we never hear about. Some make the news but with so many stories, only a few actually “make the puppet theater.” Meanwhile, how many never reach the ears of the media? We can’t do much about those for now, but we can help spread the word on others. |
We can put a face on the cause. Because it’s not about words on a page, it’s about our sisters in need. The cause is about fellow human beings – mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and godmothers to name but a few. So for as long as we can, we are going to share with you these very important stories. We would ask that you make time to read them, and then to pass them along to your friends and family. In fact, pass them on to anyone you know – it’s just that important. |
