A big damn reason to hold a CSTS event

To help shine a shiny light on the amazing people who are joining in CSTS this year, we’ll be posting a series of articles introducing them to the rest of you and explaining not just what they’re doing but hopefully why they’re doing it too.

The first of these articles focuses on the Alamo City Browncoats led by the lovely Mel.

They will be holding an affiliate event at SciFest in San Antonio, Texas, on July 9th & 10th. This is an annual free convention held at Wonderland of the Americas, formerly known as Crossroads Mall. Alamo City Browncoats will have a collection jar at their table for those feeling generous. Assuming Mel’s origami skills improve (her words not mine!), there will be a ship in the jar that they hope will fly on the love and donations from those that stop by their little corner of the world.

Mel and her team reached out to the global CSTS team after watching a charity live-stream with Youtuber Markiplier. She figured if he could raise money while just playing video games online and being himself, then she could take a leap of faith for charity.

His message is that can we can all be a force for change. The week before Alamo’s very first CSTS, Markiplier’s friend passed away and it became the driving force for the event – they would do their part to be a force for change while he was grieving.

I think you’ll all agree that this is a fantastic reason to get involved and shows that one person really can make a difference.

Mel added “The great thing was that finally taking that leap has made me realise that it can be so much fun and completely fulfilling. I can’t speak for Tami (her co-organiser) but I know that as Browncoats, this is just something that should be done and there wasn’t much that would stop us from doing this every year from here on out.”

This year, the Alamo City Browncoats will be donating to Equality Now and Kids Need To Read. They chose KNTR because they wanted to help other organisations that are special to Browncoats. In the future they hope to support some local charities as well.

As Mel so rightly ends her message to me “We’re just Browncoats looking to do good work”. Big damn heroes 🙂
