Going big for charity in Milwaukee

Those Big Damn Heroes are at it again in Milwaukee this weekend, holding what can only be described as the mudder of all auctions alongside a screening of our favourite space western.

Organiser David says “Here in Milwaukee, we like to say “Go big, or go home!” We decided to go big. This year we have nearly 600 items up for auction in our two live auctions and four silent auctions!  From artwork to clothes to books to games, everyone will find something they want to bid on at CSTS Milwaukee. Oh, and do we have autographed photos up for auction? Yes, we do! From Star Trek to the Walking Dead and DC’s Arrow to Marvel’s The Defenders and, of course, Firefly and Serenity, we’ve got you covered. Remember, all proceeds raised at CSTS Milwaukee 2018 will go to Equality Now, The Wisconsin Humane Society, and F!ckRead more…

Head to FanX this weekend for a sporking good time!

As if there weren’t already enough reasons to head to FanX this weekend (an appearance by our beloved Badger being one of them) the Utah Browncoats are holding their annual Dr. Horrible affiliate event there again this year.

They always seem to come up with some awesome interactive element to their events and organiser William says “This year we’re in everyone’s favorite crazy town where Jayne’s a hero. Drop by the booth to ride the mule and see if Jayne’s eyes follow you everywhere you go! Then stay for our screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog.”

“Our many thanks to FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention which has supported us, Equality Now and local charities since its inception. This year we are proud to be donating all proceeds to support Equality Now and Best Friends Animal Society. We… Read more…

“We have some amazing raffle and auction items including a QMx Penny maquette signed by Felicia Day, posters signed by Felicia, an even more rare Dr.… Read more…

10 Years of Flyin’ in Albuquerque

The Albuquerque Browncoats are celebrating their 10th anniversary of holding CSTS events in Albuquerque!

Organizer Charlie Fitch took over organizer duties in 2013 in Albuquerque for two reasons. First, the cause and work of Equality Now was just so inspiring and important – and second, despite all the work and long hours, CSTS continued to be a source of joy and fun, which was echoed by the increasing crowds of Browncoats who showed up by the hundreds. “I am honored to have had Johanna as a partner in crime for the past six years and by the great crew of volunteers who donate generously of their time, and by creating or donating collectables for our raffles and auction.”  Organizer Johanna Morganstern has lead a lifetime of service and was with the Mile High Browncoats before landing in Albuquerque.… Read more…

Time to make a difference in San Antonio

In another great example of an affiliate event, the Alamo City Browncoats will be  attending NDG Sci-Fest this weekend – July 7th and 8th. Organiser Mel says “Wonderland of the Americas will host this fantastic, free, family-friendly science fiction convention and we’ll be collecting donations for Equality Now and Kids Need To Read. These organizations do such wonderful work to make the world better for all. Let’s do what we can to help them carry on the good fight. Our collection jars will be waiting for you.”

As well as raising money through donations, they will be running a Firefly trivia competition with some shiny prizes for those who know their ‘verse.

Everyone’s making a fuss about the first Utah Browncoats event of the 2018 season

The Utah Browncoats are poised once again for a thundering entrance to the 2018 season with their annual main event in Salt Lake City.

On the 16th June they invite you to come and be a Big Damn Hero for Equality Now and the Volunteers of America – Utah’s Home 4 Teens!

Organiser Halo says “As attendees arrive for the Big Damn Movie screening at Brewvies Cinema Pub, they will be greeted by Mal, the custom Mini owned by local Browncoat Mark Woodring. After checking in, attendees without a Guild can be inducted into (or bribe their way into) their Guild with our Jayne Hat of Sorting. (The Guilds of the ‘Verse became a Utah Browncoat addition to the fan lore and fabric of the Firefly / Serenity universe at the Browncoat Ball of 2016.… Read more…

Why Equality Now?

When an organiser elects to host a Can’t Stop the Serenity event, be it a screening or affiliate event, they agree to donate at least 75% of the proceeds to Equality Now. You may be asking why Equality Now?

Consider for a moment the women in your life.  Now think about what you consider to be basic human rights. Now take them away from those women.

In 1992 lawyers Jessica Neuwirth, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, and Feryal Gharahi founded Equality Now because they wanted to use the law to help protect women and girls around the world and allow them to have, at the very least, basic human rights. They believed that “everyone, everywhere has the right to live without violence and discrimination.”

And here at Can’t Stop the Serenity, so do we.… Read more…

Everyone’s a hero in their own way, especially the Pennsylvania Browncoats

The first event of this year’s season has gone off like one of Jayne’s grenades, but in a good way! Organiser Matt sent us the write up below, it’s a brilliant example of an affiliate event and shows just how powerful they can be when trying to raise funds for Equality Now, and other local charities.

If you are thinking of holding a screening of Dr Horrible but the restrictions seem too troublesome, e-mail the Global Team at signal@cantstoptheserenity.com and we can talk you through how to work within the guidelines. It’s easier than it looks and can be a fantastic way to mix up your fundraising efforts. Plus, who doesn’t love seeing the Captain singing!

“The Delaware Valley Brigade of the Pennsylvania Browncoats, supported by both the River and Bridges and the Susquehanna Valley Brigades, as well as the Browncoats of NYC, just finished our long weekend at Philadelphia Wizard World Comic Con, thanks to their generous donation of a FREE 10×20 booth, where we collected $370 in donations for Equality Now in exchange for our shiny merchandise.… Read more…

A Horrible way to kick off the 2018 CSTS season!

Those super shiny (and super keen) Browncoats in Philadelphia saw an opportunity to hold an affiliate event at Wizard World and even though it is outside the official CSTS season, they grabbed the chance with two, presumably blue, hands!

On Saturday 19th May, at 7pm, they are hosting a screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in room 126AB at Pennsylvania Convention Center as part of the Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con.

Organiser Matt says “We’re asking for $2 donations at The Pennsylvania Browncoats/Browncoat Ball table (booth 1829) or at the door for admission to the screening. Admission donation includes 1 door prize ticket, additional door prize tickets available for $1 each, and all proceeds benefit Equality Now.

They will also have merchandise at the booth (all proceeds to Equality Now) and will have a table for Firefly gaming so if you’re lucky enough to be heading to Wizard World pop on by, say hello and whilst you’re there ask for details about the Philadelphia Serenity screening later in the season!… Read more…

Browncoats, Represent!

Cunning hat? Check. Unfeasibly tight pants? Check. 2018 Can’t Stop the Serenity t-shirt? No? Well let’s sort that right out! T-shirts, hoodies and tank tops proudly displaying this year’s winning design are now available through Represent.

You may recall that last year the t-shirts ran as a series of ‘campaigns’ so that people could order throughout the season and not have to wait until the end of the season to get their shinies. We are running things the same way this year so you can order any time before October, but please note that items may not arrive for up to 3-8 weeks after the end of each campaign so order well in advance if you plan on wearing your new shirt to a local event.… Read more…

Could you be a CSTS Global Sponsor?

We are once again looking for people or organisations who can help us support cities around the world in their fundraising efforts by providing items that can be used as prizes.

Ideally we would like 25 of any item so we can distribute one to all the cities who are holding events. If you don’t have 25 available please still get in touch as there are other ways we can use them to raise money for Equality Now, like our end of year global auction.

In return your name or organisation will be included in CSTS global material including our website and social media channels.  Browncoats around the world will also show you their undying love and if you know Browncoats you know that’s a whole lotta love!… Read more…

Farewell to Sending a Wave

It is with sadness that we have heard that Wendy Scott has recorded her last episode of the podcast Sending A Wave.

For 11 years or more, they have supported Can’t Stop the Serenity. Organizers and Global Event Coordinators were interviewed every year. When Odile Thomas, one of the past hosts, ran CSTS events, Sending a Wave was there recording it all.

They promoted the screenings and affiliate events and urged people to get involved.

Wendy and Odile spoke openly about what they felt worked, and what didn’t with Can’t Stop the Serenity and it was obvious how much they cared.

Eleven years and a bit is a long time to run a podcast and Wendy can be very proud of what she accomplished. We will never know how many people attended a CSTS event because they heard about it on Sending a Wave, but we do know that it made a big difference.… Read more…

Voting is now open for the official 2018 logo!

Each year the Can’t Stop the Serenity logo is used by cities all over the world to promote their events and each year we ask our amazingly talented Browncoats to come up with a new design for this logo.

Design the CSTS Art for 2018

It’s that time again. The Can’t Stop The Serenity promotional art contest is back for 2018!

But it’s not the same old contest. This year, as you know, we have a new CSTS icon, the result of a contest in the Fall. This new icon will be part of all art going forward, starting with this year’s.

All the details you need to know can be found here but briefly (and in no particular order):

  • The art may be used in a variety of fashions. The more versatile it is, the better.
  • It must be your own artwork and inspired by the movie Serenity.
  • Because this is about Equality Now and Peace in the ‘Verse, there should be no overt violence portrayed within the art.
  • There is a limit of 3 submissions per artist.
